Our client is a well-established, Florida-based mechanical contractors with full service engineering, construction, prefabrication, manufacturing and building management solutions that has been in business for over 50 years. They are seeking an experienced Director of Field Operations based in Miami, Florida.
Position Overview
The Director of Field Operations provides enterprise-wide leadership for all field execution across projects and divisions. This role is accountable for operational excellence, safety performance, workforce development, and financial outcomes. As a senior leader, the Director partners closely with executive leadership, project management, manufacturing, finance, and key clients to scale operations, improve margins, and deliver consistent, high-quality results. Success in this role requires a hands-on executive who can lead through influence, data, and field presence while building a disciplined, high-performing organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in construction, manufacturing, or operations, including at least 5 years in a senior management or director-level role.
- Demonstrated success leading large-scale field operations and cross-functional teams in complex, multi-project environments.
- Executive-level leadership and team-building capability with a strong emphasis on talent development and accountability.
- Deep expertise in construction operations, safety leadership, and enterprise risk management.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with project management, finance, manufacturing, and executive leadership.
- Strong financial acumen, including labor management, forecasting, and margin optimization.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel regionally and maintain a consistent field presence.
Preferred Credentials
- OSHA certification and advanced knowledge of safety compliance and best practices.
- PMP or equivalent project management certification.
- Experience with lean construction, operational excellence, or continuous improvement methodologies.
Key Responsibilities
Field & Operations Leadership
- Establish, implement, and continuously improve field-wide QA/QC standards to ensure consistent quality and compliance across all projects.
- Drive field productivity and operational efficiency, partnering with Project Management to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to contractual requirements.
- Provide strategic oversight of field labor operations, ensuring alignment of resources, staffing models, and execution strategies across all divisions.
- Partner with manufacturing leadership to optimize coordination between shop and field operations, improving throughput, cost efficiency, and schedule reliability.
- Lead and expand the Special Projects division, providing executive oversight while ensuring disciplined daily execution, profitability, and scalability.
- Build, lead, and sustain a best-in-class field organization through intentional hiring, training, mentoring, and performance management.
- Develop workforce strategies that improve engagement, productivity, leadership depth, and long-term retention.
- Ensure all training, certification, and succession planning initiatives are executed consistently and aligned with company growth objectives.
Safety & Risk Management
- Own the company-wide safety culture and risk management strategy, setting clear expectations and accountability at all levels.
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations, industry standards, and internal safety policies.
- Proactively identify and mitigate operational risk, driving measurable reductions in incidents, insurance exposure, and claims costs.
Strategic & Financial Leadership
- Serve as a strategic partner to executive leadership, providing operational insight, data-driven recommendations, and forward-looking analysis.
- Collaborate closely with finance and accounting to manage labor costs, project budgets, cash flow, forecasting, and margin performance.
- Ensure disciplined execution of schedules and budgets, supporting accurate forecasting and reliable financial outcomes across the portfolio.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a senior operational representative to clients, owners, and construction managers, strengthening trust and long-term partnerships.
- Partner with preconstruction and estimating teams to ensure accurate, executable pricing-particularly for Special Projects and complex scopes.
- Support business development initiatives by contributing operational expertise that drives market expansion and repeat business.
Field Presence & Regional Leadership
- Maintain a visible and engaged presence across regions and job sites, reinforcing standards, accountability, and company culture.
- Lead through accessibility and direct engagement, motivating teams and reinforcing operational discipline at the field level.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Project Delivery: Percentage of projects completed on time and within budget
- Labor Productivity: Variance between estimated and actual labor hours
- Operational Efficiency: Reduction in rework, delays, and change orders
- Manufacturing Integration: Improvements in throughput, lead times, and cost savings
- Safety Performance: OSHA recordable incident rate, LTIFR
- Employee Engagement: Retention rates, internal promotions, and satisfaction metrics
- Financial Performance: Budget adherence, margin performance, forecast accuracy
- Client Satisfaction: Repeat business, client feedback, and survey results
- Growth: New wins, special projects revenue, and market expansion
