Overview

Miami VA Healthcare System (Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Urologist Physician for the Surgical Care Services. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education: Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from a medical school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • License and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program in Urology leading to eligibility for board certification
  • (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; or (3) other residencies (non-US, followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) if otherwise meeting basic requirements
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a limited scope of practice under supervision
  • Additional: surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Board Certification: Must be board certified in Urology

  • Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019 (administered by VA Occupational Health)
  • This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs), light carrying (up to 15 lbs and under), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required
  • Walking and standing up to 2 hours each; kneeling up to 1 hour
  • Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously
  • Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and in the other eye to 20/40; depth perception
  • Ability to distinguish basic and shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted)
  • Emotional and mental stability; ability to work closely with others and alone
Duties
  • This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
  • Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the EDRP application
  • EDRP Authorized: Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply for incentive

  • Duties include admitting, evaluating, diagnosing, and providing non-operative and perioperative care for adult patients with genitourinary and adrenal conditions; endoscopic, percutaneous, and open urologic procedures
  • Make preliminary diagnoses, prescribe or provide treatment, and coordinate with specialists as required
  • Participate in Emergency and On-Call schedules
  • Provide comprehensive urologic care, including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up
  • Manage inpatient care with consulting support; perform inpatient consultations
  • Conduct outpatient clinics; review medications and management plans; adjust as needed
  • Serve as consultant to primary care and accept referrals from other providers
  • Teach and educate patients, staff, and trainees; participate in scholarly activities as appropriate
  • Refer patients as appropriate and collaborate with allied health professionals
  • Work schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 am-3:30 pm (schedules determined by supervisor); may be required to work various shifts as needed
